30 Day Nutrition Challenge 8: Performance Goals
Let’s talk about performance goals.
Why? Because they are processed based and they are awesome, that’s why.
A sole focus on the number on the scales will make you miserable and lead you to failure because every time you step on the scales and you’re not at your ideal weight you’ll feel like a failure, you’ll berate yourself and feel miserable. But, if you focus on, let’s say, getting stronger then you have to focus on the processes required to achieve this.
You want to deadlift your bodyweight, what does this require? First you need to develop the hip hinge movement pattern. Then you need to work on your technique to ensure that you are lifting safely, then you start to increase the weight gradually. Maybe by 2.5kg per week. After a couple of months, you have achieved your goal, and not once did you feel like a failure because each time you completed the necessary processes you felt good. Now that you have achieved that goal it’s time to set a new one. How about 1.5x body weight? How about doing 200 kettlebell swings with a 16kg kettlebell? How about running 10k in under 90-minutes? How about doing the London to Brighton bike ride?
When you make your journey about a performance/exercise/sports goal you go about it with more purpose than if you simply exercise to burn Calories. Exercise, as you now know, is rubbish at burning fat, it’s not the exercise that burns your fat it’s being in an energy deficit. But exercise is incredibly important for your physical and mental health and makes it easier to lose fat, or if nothing else, enables you to eat more food and still lose weight.
But, if everything you do is about pleasing the scales, you’ll never be happy because
- You have just decided that happiness is at some point in the future and not here in this moment.
- Thinking about weight loss as a one meal to the next, one hour to the next mechanism which makes you stressed and anxious.
You are NOT your scales, you are NOT your weight and if you train to improve yourself because you deserve to invest in you, you will be a much happier and more relaxed person.
Enjoy your workouts, they’re supposed to be fun.
